‘Tragic’: Woman killed, pilot seriously injured in glider crash in Tunbridge, Tasmania

A woman has died and a pilot has been taken to hospital after a glider crash in Tasmania’s inner south.

The two-seat glider crashed at a private airfield on Tunbridge Tier Rd in Tunbridge shortly before 2pm on Sunday, about 106km north of Hobart.

Tasmania Police said a woman in her early 50s was injured in the crash and died at the scene.

The pilot of the glider, a man in his mid-60s, suffered serious injuries and was taken to the Royal Hobart Hospital.

Inspector Aleena Crack said the man and woman were part of a larger group (including the woman’s husband) who were at the airport on Sunday.

“There was a larger group of people at the airport at the time,” he said.

“This is clearly a tragic outcome for these families and friends.”

While emergency service teams remained at the scene, an investigation was launched to determine the cause of the accident.
