Carlton Cruse, co-creator of Amazon’s “Jack Ryan” series, noted the surprising parallels between his show and recent U.S. attacks against Venezuela.
Clips from the second season of the series began trending on social media over the weekend; It tells about the political turmoil in Venezuela, featuring the main character Jack Ryan, played by John Krasinski.
“The reality is that Venezuela is arguably the largest source of oil and minerals on the planet,” Ryan said. “So why is this country in the midst of one of the greatest humanitarian crises in modern history?”

The political destruction, he explained, came from the country’s imaginary leader, Nicholas Reyes, who Ryan described as “crippling the national economy in half” and “increasing the poverty rate by almost 400%.”
Although the clip was released in 2019, Cruse noted perceived connections between the nearly seven-year-old episode and the real world.
“What always surprises you as a storyteller is how often real-world events overtake fiction.” Cruse said deadline Sunday. “The goal that season wasn’t prophecy; it was believability. When you ground a story in real geopolitical dynamics, reality has a way of making it rhyme.”

Cruse added that the series always tried to make international scenarios “believable” and based its script on the tensions affecting Venezuela at the time.
“[Co-creator] Cruse, Graham Roland and I were not making a statement; “We were telling a fictional, character-driven thriller rooted in Venezuela’s long-standing strategic importance,” he said. “Our job was to make the situation believable. “We approached Venezuela as a country where democratic ideals, economic reality, and geopolitical interests have long been in tension and where choices are never simple.”
