Over a year after creation, Kolathur taluk expanded

A year after a new taluk was created in Chennai district with Kolathur as its capital in August 2024, the State government recently expanded the jurisdiction of the taluk from 6.24 sq km. Up to 11.84 km2.
Since the 5.6 sq km expansion, the population of the Taluk has increased from 3.78 lakh to 4.59 lakh.
Kolathur taluk, which had only three revenue villages (Kolathur, Peravallur and Siruvallur), would now have Ayanavaram – I, Konnur, Sembium and Chinna Sembarambakkam revenue villages after reorganization of boundaries.
Taluks decreased
Ayanavaram, Aminjikarai and Perambur taluks shrank to one, two and one revenue village respectively.
The state government’s decision was “based on a report of the Chennai Collector, recommendations of the Commissioner of Revenue and took into consideration the welfare of the general public.”
In August 2024, Ayanavaram taluk was bifurcated and Kolathur taluk was created with three revenue villages to ensure welfare programs reach the beneficiaries effectively.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Revenue had in December 2024 and in May this year referred to a proposal by the Collector seeking to reorganize the new Kolathur taluk by including villages generating more revenue than Ayanavaram and Perambur taluks for the benefit of the general public. The state government accepted the proposal and issued orders.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin had inaugurated the new taluk office in August last year. Although norms exist for creating a new taluk, as per the government order issued by the Revenue Department on June 9, 2003, these norms can be relaxed if the area in question includes metropolitan areas in Chennai, hilly areas in the Nilgiris and areas later included in Kanniyakumari districts.
