Jake Tapper says noncitizen voting in New Jersey is bad for Democrats

CNN host Jake Tapper dealt a harsh blow to Democrats who have long dismissed concerns about illegal immigrants voting in elections following a stunning revelation in New Jersey on Tuesday.
Democratic New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill announced that thousands of non-citizens were mistakenly added to the voter rolls.
Sherrill said that during the previous administration, between June 2023 and June 2024, the state’s DMV recorded “approximately 6,600 people” who were never eligible to vote due to a “serious software error.”

He also disclosed that among non-citizens, “fewer than 400 people” voted in the election.
While covering breaking news, Tapper acknowledged that the latest development did not benefit Democrats.
“This is not good for the Democrats’ argument that there is no such thing as undocumented immigrants voting,” Tapper said during a panel discussion.

Conservative critics on social media targeted liberals and suggested that the New Jersey revelations confirmed concerns about non-citizens being able to vote in elections.
Members of the Trump administration noted New Jersey’s arguments for passage of the Save America Act, which aims to address election security.
Days before Sherrill’s announcement, President Donald Trump renewed his call for Congress to pass the RELIEVE America Act in a primetime address from the White House, highlighting election weaknesses in past election cycles and China’s efforts to interfere in U.S. elections.
