James Bulger’s mother ‘disgusted’ after murdered toddler’s grave is vandalised for second time in six weeks

James Bulger’s mother is left “absolutely disgusted” and heartbroken after the murdered toddler’s grave was desecrated for the second time in six weeks.

Denise Fergus, who was lured by her two-year-old son John Venables and his accomplice Robert Thompson, who then tortured and murdered him in Liverpool in February 1993, has revealed that his gravestone has been vandalized once again.

In February, heartless vandals ‘scythe’ beheaded two angels adorning the murdered child’s resting place, leaving Miss Fergus heartbroken ‘again’.

More than £20,000 has been raised by an ‘army of heroes’ via a GoFundMe page to restore little James’ resting place to its original state.

But the grieving mother was left devastated once again after ‘evil’ vandals stole the angels’ heads from her son’s grave.

Merseyside Police have since renewed their efforts to find the bandits, as well as the still-missing angel heads.

She told how her ‘heart sank’ when she discovered her young child’s grave had been desecrated once again this morning. Mirror: ‘I am absolutely disgusted that James’ tomb has been destroyed and ruined again.’

Adding that the angels had been carefully repaired a few weeks ago, he asked: ‘How evil do you have to be to vandalize and destroy a child’s grave?’

James (pictured) was taken away from his mother in a Liverpool shopping center by Jon Venables and his accomplice Robert Thompson, who tortured and killed him in February 1993.

Insisting the vandal must be found, she appealed for anyone with information or details to come forward and contact police.

Katie McCreath, KMC Legal and Finance Director and part of Denise’s legal team, confirmed that James’ headstone had been vandalized for a second time, in an act she described as “both regrettable and unacceptable”.

‘Denise is understandably devastated. “For every parent, a cemetery is a place of reflection, peace and remembrance,” he said, adding that it was a “deeply personal and emotional violation.”

Detailing that the family were in disbelief at the persecution decades after their son’s death, Ms McCreath confirmed that police had been informed of the incident.

It comes after Miss Fergus was left heartbroken after the angels on either side of the two-year-old’s headstone were shattered following a sickening attack in February.

Sharing the photo showing the damage on social media, a devastated Denise wrote: ‘I felt heartbroken once again today. We received a message from a lady walking her dog in the cemetery where James is resting.

‘Unfortunately, he told us that the gravestone and its surroundings were destroyed. We rushed there to find the angels on both sides of the tombstone shattered into pieces.

‘I need to find the person who did this to my son’s resting place. I try to help as many families as I can through justice campaigns or by helping families through the charity I set up in her memory, and one disgusting bitch did this… to a baby’s grave! Really??’

The vandalism occurred at Kirkdale Cemetery in Liverpool between the late morning and early afternoon of February 26.

Writing on Facebook, Denise added: ‘If anyone has any information please send it via the James Bulger Memorial Trust charity page or contact Merseyside Police and let them know if you saw or heard anything.

‘I’m devastated that someone could be so cruel and hurtful to my James.’

Merseyside Police confirmed two large marble angels were damaged in Kirkdale Cemetery at around 4.20pm on February 26, with a smaller angel having been placed in a bin and a doll toy also stolen.

Following the incident, a GoFundMe page was set up which has raised more than £23,000. This page allowed Miss Fergus to not only temporarily repair the tomb, but also modify it and make it even safer for the future.

Denise thanked supporters for their donations, which exceeded the original target of £13,000, meaning they could ‘leave James another true legacy’ and visit his grave on March 16, the two-year-old’s birthday.

In 1993, James was with his mother at the New Strand Shopping Center in Bootle, Merseyside, before he was taken away by Thompson and Venables; This moment was captured on chilling CCTV footage.

His dismembered body was found two days later on a railway line two and a half miles away in Walton, Liverpool.

Thompson and Venables were convicted of kidnapping and murder in November 1993, making them the youngest convicted murderers in modern British history.

They were sentenced to indefinite detention in secure units and remained in custody until June 2001, when the Parole Board recommended they be released on a life license at the age of 18.

They were both given new identities and moved to secret locations under a ‘witness protection’-like program.

Venables was later jailed in 2010 for possessing images of child pornography on his computer.

He was released on parole in 2013 but was recalled to prison in November 2017 after he again had images of child pornography on his computer. His appeals for parole in 2023 were rejected.

Following the little boy’s death, Denise and her husband Stuart set up the James Bulger Memorial Trust to help other families going through difficult times.

His projects include a holiday home near Blackpool, allowing struggling families to spend some time away.

They announced in March that extra donations from the money raised for James’ gravestone would go towards the maintenance of the holiday cottage.
