James Tavernier: Rangers captain to leave club at end of season after 11 years at Ibrox

Captain James Tavernier has announced he will leave Rangers at the end of the season after 11 years at Ibrox.

The 34-year-old, the highest-scoring defender in English football, has been in charge of the Glasgow side for the last eight years, winning the Scottish Premier League in 2021, the Scottish Cup the following year and the League Cup in 2023. He also captained Rangers, who lost on penalties to Eintracht Frankfurt in the 2022 Europa League final.

As a right-back player, the English player scored 144 goals in 562 matches for Rangers, and 152 goals in total.

In his post on his Instagram account, he said that leaving the team at the end of his current contract was “not an easy decision.”

“This club has been a huge part of my life and my family’s life over the last 11 years,” he said.

“This has given me so much both on and off the field and from the moment I arrived I have always tried to give everything I could to represent it in the right way.

“Having the honor of being captain of this club since 2018 is something I will always be incredibly proud of. To lead this team, to wear the armband and to be trusted in this role means more to me than I can put into words.”
