Jasmine Crockett claims GOP rigged her primary election: ‘What Republicans like to do’

U.S. Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-Texas) is alleging that Republicans are trying to rig her primary race against moderate Texas State Rep. James Talarico, District-50, after the state’s Supreme Court issued an emergency ruling Tuesday against her campaign’s request that voters in Dallas County be granted an extension to clear up confusion about Republican-led changes to polling places.

Republicans and Democrats had not held a joint primary on Tuesday, leading to polling place restrictions that Democrats like Crockett argue disenfranchise voters.

Crockett’s allegations come after the Texas Supreme Court overturned a lower judge’s decision to keep polling places open longer and to require the segregation of votes cast after the initial closing time. Democrats have pushed to keep polling places open longer because of polling place restrictions resulting from Republicans and Democrats not holding joint primary elections.

“Knowing that Dallas County “There’s a huge voter dump going on, I don’t think we’ll know tonight’s general election results,” Crockett told supporters gathered to celebrate his potential victory.

“So my news is, based on what’s going on specifically in Dallas County, we won’t be able to release the election results tonight. Unfortunately, that’s the situation.” Republicans I love doing it. And so they specifically targeted Dallas County, and I think we all know why.”

The Texas Supreme Court’s decision to reverse a lower court’s earlier-night decision that gave Dallas County voters until 9 p.m. instructed tabulators to disregard votes arriving after 7 p.m.

“I can tell you now that people are being disenfranchised,” Crockett told supporters at a campaign event Tuesday evening as the court battles raged. “My view is that we won’t know the general election results tonight.”

Voters were left confused Tuesday evening after some counties, including Dallas, decided to separate voting locations for the Republican and Democratic primaries.

According to Texas law, Party leaders may object to primary elections being held together, in the same place and with the same equipment. In Tuesday’s primaries, states like Houston decided to forgo joint primaries in favor of cross-voting, out of fear that holding Republican and Democratic elections in the same location could lead to sabotage.

Meanwhile, voters in Texas can participate in any primary election without party registration because it hosts open primaries.
