Rep. Jasmine Crockett, D-Texas, said in an interview published Wednesday that the Democratic Senate primary race is a “racist race” and argued that she does not need to campaign with former rival and party nominee James Talarico.
Crockett said with the hosts at the Essence Festival: “Native Lands” podcast He said the best thing he could do for his former nemesis Talarico was to support Black candidates on the ballot to get more Black voters to turn out in November.
“The best thing I can do is get candidates off the ballot that no one has ever heard of and do my best to elevate them and increase voter turnout like we did in Texas,” he said.
“You see, a lot of haters have a lot to say about me and my race and how I run it,” Crockett continued. “But the truth is there were a lot of racists, not many, it was racist. It was a racist race, right? But we live in America and you are celebrating your 250th anniversary. OK? We know what this country is. But let me tell you the facts. There is no other race in the state of Texas that more people vote for than Barack.” [Obama] and Hillary [Clinton]”

Crockett launched a Senate bid in 2025, eventually losing the Democratic nomination to state legislator Talarico. Talarico is currently facing Republican Ken Paxton in the general election.
“Did you hear me?” he said during the podcast interview. “Literally, our Democratic candidate got 500,000 votes last presidential year. I got twice that and I’m still losing. So listen, I mean this with all sincerity. I’m doing my part.”
Crockett said he wasn’t treated fairly in the race.

“The reality is that people hold me to a completely different standard,” he said. “The truth is, we’ve never seen anyone being forced into a Senate race to help their opponent who, quote unquote, beat them. This is the first time we’ve seen that in this country. And it just so happened that it ended up being a high-profile Black woman.”
“I’m no one’s footstool, but I believe in doing whatever I can, especially for the good and not at the expense of black people,” Crockett added. “And I’m committed to that. I’m going to keep doing this work.”

“And don’t worry about my math and how it works in my mind,” Crockett continued. “Because the truth is, if you give people more than one thing to vote for, you have a better chance of getting them to the polls.”
