JD Vance stated that no agreement was reached after 21 hours of negotiations with Iran and stated that Iran’s nuclear ambitions are the biggest obstacle to peace.
Talks between the USA and Iran took place over the weekend in Pakistan’s capital Islamabad, with the vice president heading the US delegation.
“The bad news is that we couldn’t reach an agreement,” Vance told reporters.
Reports from the peace talks suggest that the status of the strait remains a matter of significant debate, with Vance suggesting that the strait is surrounded by a nuclear enrichment agreement.
According to sources, there were various “disagreements” between the Iranian and US delegations during the talks, and Iranian media pointed out Washington’s “excessive demands” and “excessive intervention”.
But Vance said the real sticking point was that the United States had not seen “a fundamental commitment from the Iranians not to develop nuclear weapons.”
He added: “This is the fundamental goal of the President of the United States, and that is what we have sought to achieve through these negotiations.”
Speaking to reporters outside the White House on Saturday Donald Trump He declared military victory over Iran and downplayed the importance of ongoing ceasefire negotiations, saying “no matter what, we won.”
“Let’s see what happens; maybe they will make a deal, maybe they won’t,” the President said. “It doesn’t matter. As far as America is concerned, we won.”
Vance has now confirmed that he will return to the US.
He added: “We are returning to the US without reaching an agreement.
“We have made it very clear what our red lines are, what we are willing to comply with, and what we are not willing to comply with.
“And we made that as clear as we could. And they chose not to accept our terms.”
Iran and the United States have been seeking a permanent end to the war after agreeing to a shaky ceasefire on Tuesday.
The two sides face significant obstacles as they remain distant from each other on key issues.
