Government confirms truck curfew when West Gate Tunnel opens

When the West Gate Tunnel opens (an exact date has not yet been determined), tolls of up to $178 per day for heavy vehicles will apply after an initial free period in January.
Before Saturday’s lockdown announcement, modeling produced by the West Gate Tunnel Project in 2017 predicted that truck traffic on Williamstown Road would roughly double by 2031, reaching 4700 heavy vehicles per day.
As recently as March 2025, Horne wrote in letters seen by The Age that there were no plans to impose a nightly curfew, which would lead to transport efficiency issues.
