Jo Dee Messina says record label rejected her for being ‘too fat’

Country singer Jo Dee Messina shares the harsh criticism she faced early in her career.
During a recent interview “The Bobby Bones ShowThe 55-year-old “Bye Bye” singer shared that when she was first starting out, she was rejected by a record label because of her weight.
“I remember being rejected by a record company in Nashville. They said I was too fat,” she said. “They said to my producer, ‘Oh, if he was 10 kilos lighter we’d sign him.'”
He said he was “devastated” after hearing this, and when later asked if he could drop the criticism after achieving major success in the music industry, Messina replied that he had not, stating: “30 years later, I still talk about it. I haven’t.”

Although Messina recalled feeling discouraged, he said his sister, whom he described as his “biggest support”, encouraged him to “keep going” and told him, “They say you have to be ignored a thousand times before you come to an agreement.”
Messina broke through in the music world in 1996 with his self-titled debut album, which featured one of the biggest hits of his career, “Heads Carolina, Tails California.” His success continued with his second album, “I’m Alright”, which went double platinum.
The singer will release her first studio album in 12 years, “Bridges”, in the summer and will release the album’s first single, “Some Bridges”, on Friday. Celebrated the release of the song instagramHis fans couldn’t help but share his excitement.

Her last studio album, “Me”, was released in 2014 and featured songs such as “Peace Sign” and “A Woman’s Rant”.
Messina later announced in September 2017 that he had been diagnosed with cancer in an open letter signed by JDM Team rather than the artist himself and posted to his Facebook account.

After receiving treatment that fall, Messina announced his recovery and return to performing in March 2018.
“I’ve gotten to the point where I go once a year and get blood work and scans checked,” he said on the “Bobby Bones Show.”

Messina is currently on tour in the United States promoting his upcoming album and tells Bones and his co-host that their schedules are “very active.”

“I don’t stand still. There are two songs where I play guitar, and that’s the one I stay quiet the most,” he said. “And other than that, I’m running around. I’m banging my head… You’ll see a lot of pictures, my hair flying around. This is not a beauty show by any means.”
