Morrisons closing 1 type of store as 100 branches set to shut | UK | News

Morrisons has confirmed that a popular convenience store in Berkshire will close as part of wider plans to close around 100 Morrisons Daily stores across the UK. The supermarket chain recently announced plans to shutter dozens of Morrisons Daily branches as part of a “wider strategy to improve the overall performance of the retailer’s grocery network.”
The supermarket said stores bought as part of a £190 million rescue deal for McColl’s in 2022 were subject to ongoing review but had been loss-making for some time despite efforts to boost trading. Morrisons said the situation for stores had worsened due to “significant cost increases resulting from Government policy choices”, including national living wage increases and increases in employer National Insurance contributions.
Morrisons has not provided a full list of stores to close because although some locations have been confirmed, discussions with employees are ongoing.
The chain emphasized that this move affects company-owned stores but not franchise stores. This is part of the business that continues to grow. York Press.
One of Morrisons Dailys’ latest confirmed closures is a branch in Crown Wood in Bracknell, which also includes a Post Office. The Post Office announced that it is waiting for applications from retailers who want to open branches in the region.
A spokesperson told Sun: “We have been informed by the Morrisons that, following an investigation, they will be making the difficult decision to close the Morrisons Daily store, where Crown Wood Post Office is located.
“We are fully aware of the inconvenience this will cause to our customers, particularly those who rely on our banking and parcel services.”
A spokesperson for Morrisons said: “The performance of all company-owned stores in our provision business is subject to ongoing review.
“Having completed the review, we are proposing to make the difficult but necessary decision to close some of these stores over the next few months.
“This process identified a number of stores that were part of the McColl acquisition whose performance had been questioned for a number of years and were loss-making despite corrective measures.”
The retailer said the offer meant “store workers will now face the risk of being made redundant” but that they would provide support to those affected.
This includes plans to find other opportunities where possible for affected workers, it said.
