Podcaster Joe Rogan called out California Governor Gavin Newsom on Friday for criticizing independent journalist Nick Shirley for doing what his government couldn’t.
Shirley, a young YouTuber who films independent investigations, came into the national spotlight after posting a viral investigation alleging fraud in state-funded daycare programs in Minnesota. He recently continued his work by citing similar fraudulent business schemes in California.
But Newsom’s office wasn’t too happy about this, and mocked the investigation into Shirley’s daycare fraud by sending a man carrying several cameras around the daycare asking the teacher, “Hey, can I see your kids?” He responded by posting a satirical AI-generated photo of a man asking.
“Have you seen what the Governor has published, what Newsom’s press office has published?” Rogan asked his guest: Friday’s episode “The Joe Rogan Experience.” “They posted a photo of Nick Shirley looking like a fake Nick Shirley, like a meme, like Nick Shirley looking out the window.”

Rogan rhetorically addressed Newsom, saying: “Like, Hey, he’s doing your job. He’s exposing fraud, and what you’re doing is making fun of him?”
Comedian Mark Normand agrees: “That’s right. You should say, ‘Oh, there’s fraud? I’m the governor.'”
Rogan continued: “If you care, they should launch investigations into all these places immediately, but all they want to do is just confuse, cover up, make it look stupid – whatever it is, make it look like white supremacist – Nazi, whatever, MAGA, come up with a name.”
Shirley also slammed the Newsom press office’s response: “You realize I’m trying to help America eliminate fraud and waste, right? You don’t have to try to make me out to be the bad guy to expose fraud. The people are over it. Start working for the people, not against them.”

The online meeting with Newsom’s office took place shortly after Shirley posted a video on her account. YouTube page “I Investigated California’s Billion-Dollar Fraud Crisis.”
On channel X, where the video was shared, Shirley claimed that the scam she discovered in California was bigger than the one in Minnesota.
“We have uncovered over $170,000,000 in fraud as these scammers live in luxury without facing any consequences,” the post said. “Like and share, we MUST STOP the scam.”
Fox News Digital reached out to Newsom’s press office but did not immediately receive a response.
