John Fetterman should run for president in 2028 to save Democrats

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Pennsylvania Senator John Fetterman is the most abnormal politician in America today. Often willing to attack fellow Democrats, he appears to be one of a kind on Capitol Hill, even though his ideas are shared by a majority of Americans, including many Democrats.

It’s not entirely clear how Fetterman went from being a progressive and unsuccessful Senate candidate in 2016 to winning in 2022 and becoming a moderate thorn in the side of Democrats who have consistently faltered to the left. Some believe his medical problems changed him, but the answer may be much simpler.

In fact, it may not be that Fetterman is moving away from his party, but that his party is moving away from Fetterman.

A notable example is Israel. Even five years ago, support for the Jewish state was as widespread among elected Democrats as the EZ Pass on American highways. But the absurd and fabricated consensus in the party today is that Israel is committing genocide.

Fetterman, along with several others like Rep. Ritchie Torres (D-Y.), have fought hard against these anti-Israel narratives, even as so-called pro-Israel voices like Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer have become shamefully fixated on the issue.

More recently, with the current shutdown of the Department of Homeland Security, Fetterman is once again adhering to his own party leadership, insisting that the agency must be fully funded with no strings attached.

He is the only Democrat in the upper chamber to take this sensible stance.

Fetterman is also the only Democrat willing to cheer the deaths of brutal regime leaders in Iran while the rest of his party undermines the war effort with senseless attacks against Trump and War Secretary Pete Hegseth.

Meanwhile, as for Zohran Mamdani, the communist mayor of New York City who is one of the most popular figures in Democratic polls, Fetterman said of him last year: “Everything I’ve read about him, I disagree with almost none of it politically. That’s where I’m at as a Democrat myself. He’s not even a Democrat, to be honest.”

But Fetterman seems to be wrong here. In fact, Democrats lined up to support and endorse Madman Mamdani and his merry band of capitalism-hating DSA cronies, and it was Fetterman who lost support among party voters.

But he does not lose the support of all voters.

According to a recent Quinnipiac poll, 72 percent of Republican voters in the Keystone state approve of Fetterman, while only 22 percent of Democrats approve; Independents are split about 50/50.

This is the strange place we find ourselves; More Republican voters in Pennsylvania approve of Democratic Senator Fetterman than Republican voters in Texas approve of Republican Senator John Cornyn.

All of this has led to speculation that the hooded maverick might switch parties and run for the Republican seat in 2028. But that’s not the meaning I take from Fetterman’s words and actions.

Fetterman wants to save the Democratic Party, not abandon it.

The best way for Fetterman to achieve that goal is not to defend his Senate seat in two years, but to run for president.

Lately, I’ve been asking some people I know on both sides of the aisle whether Fetterman has a shot at winning the presidency in 2028. The most usual answer was “yes” with a small number of “definitely”.

The logic here is that any other potential Democrats who might stand on the presidential primary debate stage will support the wacky left-wing ideas that Fetterman opposes.

Especially now that sports media celebrity Stephen A. Smith has announced that he will not be a candidate due to the financial blow he will take, Fetterman will be the only Democrat in the field offering a path back to centrist politics.

The odds are certainly stacked against Fetterman on his quixotic mission to restore the sanity of America’s oldest political party, but then again, what were the odds of this man becoming a senator in the first place?

All Americans should be glad to have this one senator who speaks plainly, regardless of the party’s speeches, marching orders, or the flickering winds of public opinion. Maybe it’s naive to believe that these qualities still matter to voters, but if so, call me naive.
