Karjat MLA Rohit Pawar hits out at CJI comment on youngsters

Karjat-Jamkhed MLA and NCP (SP) leader Rohit Pawar criticized Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant’s statement comparing unemployed youths to parasites and cockroaches as “unacceptable” and a reflection of intolerance towards criticism and questioning.

Mr. Pawar said that despite his utmost respect for the Indian judiciary, such statements by a Constitutional authority are extremely hurtful and appear to mock an entire generation struggling with broken promises, lack of opportunities and rising unemployment.

CJI Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi hired a lawyer to “follow up” on the appointment of a senior advocate, saying there were already “parasites” attacking the system in the society and asked the petitioner if he wanted to join hands with them.

In a statement, Mr. Pawar noted that although these remarks were made in the context of petitions regarding fake degree holders and appointment of senior counsel, it was inappropriate to lump unemployed youths and RTI activists in the same category.

“It is completely unacceptable to compare the youth of India, RTI activists, media representatives and those expressing different views to parasites or cockroaches. Such language reflects extreme intolerance towards critics and questioners,” he said.

He said that an RTI activist, journalists and a student speaking truth to power are the real foundations of democracy.

“Despite grandiose talks about employment and development, thousands of educated young people are struggling for dignity, jobs and survival. They are looking for accountability and a platform to voice their concerns,” he said. “If institutions are afraid of the questions young people ask, the problem is not with the youth, but with the system,” he added.
