Kate ‘buzzing’ after trip to Italy, William says
The Princess of Wales has returned from a trip to Italy “enthusiastic” about encouraging children’s early years development and has become a “professional” at it, her husband said.
Prince William told Heart radio’s breakfast show about Kate’s first official overseas tour in more than three years.
He warned that his wife had “pulled herself back” to make more overseas visits following successful cancer treatment, but royal trips had negative consequences so they had to “make sure she is well and rested”.
She also paid a personal tribute to her husband Kate: “She’s a great mother and a great wife and literally our family couldn’t cope without her, so she’s been absolutely amazing, she really is.”
William appeared live on the breakfast show broadcast from a cafe on the Isles of Scilly; where the prince will then visit the Isles of Scilly Hospital to meet staff and patients and to open a new facility boosting the islands’ medical capacity.
In a wide-ranging interview, the prince joked about going to school, his love of dance music and how he still follows his late grandmother the queen’s rule for making scones: cream first, jam second.
Asked if he was proud of Kate’s successful visit to Italy, William replied: “So proud, so very proud. She was amazing.”
“He’s been through a lot, especially in the last few years. He was looking forward to the trip to Italy and so I’m really glad it went really well.”
Kate received an enthusiastic welcome from the people of Reggio Emilia, Italy, where she learned about an innovative approach being pioneered in the city to educating young children.
William added: “He wanted to go and do a lot of research, now he spends God knows how much time looking at all the paperwork.
“He’s a total pro in his early years and so most nights I’m in his bedroom trying to get through all the paperwork he’s got ready to read.
“I’m so glad everything went well for him and yeah, I think he came back excited.”
An aide to the princess last week described the trip as a “big moment” for Kate, who has experienced a cancer diagnosis and successful treatment since traveling to the United States more than three years ago.
William and Kate’s last major extended tour together was a trip to the Caribbean in March 2022 to celebrate the Platinum Jubilee, before spending three days in Boston for the prince’s Earthshot Awards ceremony in December 2022.
As Duke of Cornwall, William was questioned about how he ate scones, as people in Cornwall traditionally ate their scones with jam then cream, but he controversially said he enjoyed them the Devon way – cream first, then jam.
She replied: “I love that I am the authority on scones, I can only tell you what I learned from my grandmother and she would definitely put the icing on first.”
