Kathy Griffin accuses LAPD of White nationalism as Mayor Bass stays silent

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass remained silent Monday when comedian Kathy Griffin accused her city’s police department of being part of “White nationalism.”

during a Instagram Live eventGriffin spoke with Bass about what he believed were unfair attacks on the sitting mayor.

“I really think a lot of the hardships happen to you because you’re a black woman,” Griffin said, adding that the Los Angeles City Council and the Los Angeles Police Department could be “hostile” toward her.

Bass grinned at the comment as Griffin continued.

“Talk to us, if you can, about what it’s like to deal with a group of law enforcement officers who, although diverse, are not diverse, but maybe there’s some White nationalism in law enforcement, in my opinion, and [the] The city council was disorganized. So how do you deal with those elements?” Griffin said.

Bass did not respond to the charge that there is White nationalism in law enforcement, instead explaining that he does not have the authority to use the LAPD against federal officers during immigration raids.

Rival mayoral candidate Spencer Pratt reacted to a clip of the speech: airing on X That Bass was “frightened and helpless.”

Throughout the interview, Bass also emphasized that his power is limited on some local issues.

“At the same time, I’m not responsible for schools. I’m not responsible for health care,” Bass said.

“So I guess when the feds take away your school lunches, then they blame you?” Griffin asked.

“Yes, absolutely,” Bass said.

Fox News Digital reached out to the LAPD and the mayor’s office for comment but did not immediately receive a response.

Although Bass had previously called for police reform in 2020, he largely backed the LAPD and pushed for higher staffing. But he has had controversial racial and political goals for the department in the past.

In 2023, a summary of public safety goals and police reforms included efforts to “identify, discipline, and/or terminate officers affiliated with far-right organizations in the country” and remove barriers for “ethnic groups that are disproportionately excluded from new officer training.”
