Katie Hobbs wins Arizona Democratic primary unopposed for governor

Democratic Gov. Katie Hobbs is set to seek re-election in battleground Arizona.
That’s because the incumbent governor ran unopposed in Tuesday’s Democratic primary.
Hobbs, the former Arizona Secretary of State who narrowly defeated then-GOP candidate Kari Lake four years ago, now heads to the general election in the key battleground state of the Southwest.

The governor will face the winner of the Republican gubernatorial primary.
Rep. Andy Biggs, former House Freedom Caucus chairman, is backed by President Donald Trump and the political wing of conservative powerhouse Turning Point USA. Also on the GOP ballot are longtime Republican Rep. David Schweikert, concrete pumping contractor Scott Neely, who is running for governor for a second consecutive term, and business owner Ken Miceli.

Hobbs, who has amassed a formidable campaign war chest, spent nearly $7 million during the primary to run ads despite facing no competition.
“We’re running the race we need to win, and it’s going to take a long time to get there. We know it’s going to be a close race,” Hobbs told reporters Monday. “I’m proud of the support I’ve raised, and you know, I’m not raising campaign money to take it away. I’m raising it to spend it.”
The governor’s ads, aimed in part at independent and Republican voters, showcased what he said were Arizona’s economic gains during his tenure and his bipartisan efforts working across the aisle with the GOP-controlled legislature.

The Libertarian Party, Green Party and No Labels are also fielding candidates on the general election ballot in the race for Arizona governor.
