New Jersey Gov. Sherrill denied entry to Newark ICE detention facility

Anti-ICE protesters and authorities clashed Monday outside a New Jersey detention facility where critics claim illegal immigrants are being held in horrific conditions.

Protesters attempted to form a human chain outside the Delaney Hall detention center in Newark. According to local news, New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill attempted to enter the building but was denied entry.

“My request for access to Delaney Hall was officially denied this morning, raising serious questions about what they are trying to hide from the public eye,” Sherrill said, according to Patch. he said.

“I have long opposed private detention facilities and will continue to advocate for the closure of Delaney Hall and the expansion of mass detention facilities in New Jersey, such as the proposed facility in Roxbury,” the governor added.

Some protesters threw water and shouted at U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers who were seen detaining several demonstrators, WPIX-TV reported.

Protesters and onlookers were heard yelling at ICE officers, who ordered the crowd to a grassy area off the road. Agents and protesters confronted each other before the situation calmed down.

“No more ICE!” protesters chanted slogans. Others said, “Release them all!” he shouted.

Meanwhile, hundreds of detainees launched hunger and labor strikes, claiming that they lived in poor conditions and were deprived of medical treatment and visits from lawyers. In a group letter published last week, nearly 300 detainees said they were living in “inhumane” conditions, citing malnutrition and medical neglect.

The letter acknowledges that they entered the United States illegally and states that they now feel “kidnapped.”

“Initially, we ask for forgiveness for the manner in which we entered the United States, but given the conditions we are experiencing in our countries, this endangers our lives and the lives of some members of our family,” the letter said. The statement is included. “We feel defenseless and it goes without saying that in a sense we have been kidnapped, unjustly detained and tortured physically and psychologically due to the inadequate food supplies provided in these detention centres.”

A DHS spokesperson told Fox News Digital that all detainees are provided with three meals a day, clean water, clothing, bedding, showers, soap and toiletries.

“Illegal aliens also have access to telephones to communicate with their family members and lawyers,” the spokesman said. “Certified dietitians evaluate the meals. In fact, ICE’s detention standards are higher than most US prisons that hold actual US citizens.”

Family members and loved ones have been keeping watch outside the facility since Friday.

In February 2025, then-Deputy Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security Tricia McLaughlin said the facility housed “murderers, terrorists, child rapists, and MS-13 gang members.”

Senator Andy Kim and Representatives Rob Menendez Jr., Nellie Pou, LaMonica McIver, Analilia Mejia and Frank Pallone Jr. Multiple elected officials have recently visited the facility or called for its closure.
