Hegseth stumbled through a 10-minute speech, managing to shock the Navy service members by joking about bombing and even ripping his own son.
Self-appointed Secretary of War Pete Hegseth was met with excruciatingly awkward silence when he tried to live up to President Donald Trump’s hype during a speech. Hegseth took the stage just before Trump aboard the USS George Washington at Yokosuka Naval Base in Japan on Tuesday and broke out to Metallica’s “Enter Sandman.” The band had previously ordered Hegseth’s agency not to use the track. The first running joke to juxtapose soldiers and women was “It’s a long flight to get here.” This was met with a brief laugh.
