Keir Starmer left red-faced as he stumbles at G20 Summit | Politics | News

Sir Keir Starmer made quite the entrance by greeting a group of business representatives at the annual G20 summit. The Prime Minister came to Johannesburg, South Africa, today for the meeting of world leaders bringing together the world’s 20 largest economies. However, when Sir Keir reached the summit, he was filmed briefly losing his balance as he walked towards a group of business leaders.
In the video footage of the little trip, the Prime Minister can be seen tumbling towards the impatiently waiting representatives, then regaining his balance and greeting the businessmen. Sir Keir has faced mounting criticism ahead of the trip due to the large amount of time he has spent abroad since winning the Election in July last year.
His visit to South Africa to attend the summit was the 45th country he visited since he took office.
But the Prime Minister defended his decision to make the long-distance trip just a week before the Chancellor is due to announce his much-anticipated budget. In his statement to journalists on the plane, he said that the international issues planned to be discussed in South Africa will directly affect the UK.
“The G20 are the 20 strongest economies in the world and they are very important to the UK,” he said.
“There are 200,000 jobs created in the UK from G20 countries over the last three years and the focus of the budget will be more on the economy and cost of living.
“I will focus on the deals we can do, the work we can do with our partner countries, and ensuring that the work we do internationally directly impacts our country in positive ways; good, secure jobs, with investment from G20 partners and allies, are really important if you want to tackle the cost of living and make people better off.”
The G20 summit is also the first summit in the history of the event that a US president did not attend. Donald Trump It will not fly to South Africa and had initially instructed US officials not to travel to the annual meeting.
