The armed suspect, identified by authorities as Cole Allen, 31, of Torrance, California, reportedly attacked a security checkpoint at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner on Saturday, armed with a shotgun, a handgun and several knives.
Allen was captured by agents after a brief but terrifying gunfight in the hotel lobby.
A Secret Service agent was shot but was wearing a bulletproof vest and escaped without serious injury. Nearly 8 shots were fired during the incident.
Despite the rapid response of security services, Allen managed to get within 100 meters of President Trump and dozens of key officials.
After the gunman exchanged gunfire with Secret Service agents, Mr. Trump, First Lady Melania Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance hurriedly left the ballroom stage.
Authorities said Allen, a 31-year-old teacher who supports the Democratic Party, checked into the hotel as a guest.
He reportedly told officers he wanted to shoot Trump administration officials.
