King Charles puts Prince Andrew furore to one side as he visits Manchester synagogue in show of support for Jewish community after terror attack

While the King focuses on his public duties today, he will try to put aside the growing scandal around his brother Prince Andrew.

Charles, 76, arrived at Heaton Park Hebrew Community Synagogue this afternoon to show his support for the Jewish community, which was targeted by a knifeman earlier this month.

During the incident, 2 people tragically lost their lives and 3 people were seriously injured.

Due to increased security, the visit was not announced in advance, but the media is covering the event.

The King, who is Supreme Governor of the Church of England but has devoted his life to promoting interfaith harmony and dialogue, was keen to meet those affected by the 2 October attack, as well as demonstrate his continued support for the Jewish community more generally.

He will then meet emergency service staff and recognize their efforts to support the local community in Heaton Park, Manchester.

The synagogue has reopened for the first time since the incident that claimed the lives of Melvin Cravitz and Adrian Daulby.

The synagogue’s congregation, along with members of Manchester’s Jewish community, gathered in the main building last week to celebrate the holidays of Shemini Atzeret and Simchat Torah.

Rob Kanter, the synagogue’s vice president, said there was “a really positive turnout.” One participant also described the atmosphere as ‘joyous and resilient’.

35-year-old Jihad Al Shami carried out his bloody attack on Yom Kippur, the holiest day of the Jewish calendar.

He first drove a car into a security guard and stabbed a congregant before attempting to break into the synagogue, which was barricaded by worshipers.

He was shot dead by police and investigations into his background are ongoing. Police are treating the attack as a terrorist incident.

People pay their respects at the synagogue ahead of the King’s visit today

It has been a tough few weeks for the monarch, who is currently undergoing weekly cancer treatment, as he tries to focus on public affairs and state duties while facing a tsunami of allegations about his brother Prince Andrew.

These relate to both his friendship with convicted pedophile Jeffrey Epstein and the late Virginia Guiffre’s allegations that she was forced to have sex with him when she was a teenager, as well as his ongoing concerns about his business dealings, particularly with China.

There were fears at Buckingham Palace that the scandal would overshadow Her Majesty’s state visit to Vatican City later this week, where she will be the first British monarch and head of the Church of England to pray publicly with a pope in 500 years, in a sign of her determination to promote interfaith peace.
