The fire department confirmed they were dealing with a “scrapyard fire.”

A West Midlands Fire Brigade spokesman said: “Shortly after 10.30am on Wednesday, April 1, we responded to Lifford Lane in Kings Norton, Birmingham.

“There are currently 11 fire engines on duty, a hydraulic aerial platform and a 4×4 brigade response vehicle, staffed by approximately 60 firefighters from Kings Norton, Bournbrook, Northfield, Woodgate Valley, Highgate, Smethwick, Aston, Aldridge, Erdington, Handsworth and Haden Cross stations. “Further resources are expected at the scene.

“This is a significant scrapyard fire that has created a large plume of smoke in the area, so if you live or work nearby please close your windows and doors.

“Traffic has been disrupted so please avoid the area while we work on scene.”
