KMB enforcement wing inspects houseboats, fines violators in Kerala

The inspection wing of the Kerala Maritime Board (KMB) has started inspecting houseboats in Kozhikode district to ensure the safety of tourists in various water tourism destinations.
The team will verify the registration certificates of floating boats, the maintenance status of rescue accessories, fire-fighting measures and details of workers dealing with tourists.
KMB sources said any violations will be taken seriously and heavy fines will be imposed on illegal operators. Officials added that flash inspections will be carried out across the state as part of the ongoing security audit due to the tourist season.
Floating boat operators, who were found guilty of various violations in the initial investigation, were fined ₹ 1.30 lakh. According to the KMB team, some operators did not renew registrations and did not ensure proper maintenance of rescue accessories.
Crew members warned that violations of pontoon capacity limits will not be tolerated and that boat operators should only hire trained personnel rather than temporary workers.
Last year, licensed houseboat operators complained that unlicensed operators posed a security threat to the tourism industry. In response, KMB and port authorities conducted a series of rapid inspections.
“Tourists should also check the amenities and registration details of the houseboats while booking. Only approved operators should be contacted during group tours involving children,” an official said. He also said there had been complaints in the past about suspected fishing boats being used for water tourism activities.
