At an interactive session organized by the Merchants’ Chamber of Commerce and Industry, West Bengal Transport Minister Arjun Singh announced the proposal to modernize Kolkata’s historic tram network and outlined plans to reintroduce air-conditioned trams and expand routes across the city. He said the government had commissioned RITES to conduct a feasibility study within 30 days, while also considering battery-powered trams, electric buses and broader multimodal transport improvements to strengthen urban mobility.
