Labor’s housing tax reforms must be the beginning, not the end

In a rare show of principle, the Albanian government has secured passage of reforms on capital gains tax and negative practices. They must be wholeheartedly congratulated for correcting 26 years of bad policy, which has included inflationary measures on house prices in Australia. Many remained, but a start was made towards long-lasting positive reforms.
Jim Chalmers’ 2026 budget has been met with predictable complaints from the property industry, the opposition and the Murdoch-manipulated media; these complaints focused specifically on injustice towards newly established companies (startups?) now receiving concessions that somewhat mitigate the changes.
