Bill Maher Says He Stopped the ‘Cheap Shots’ at Trump After Heated White House Meeting: ‘I Don’t Have to Go There’
Bill Maher shared that he stopped taking cheap shots at President Donald Trump after a heated face-to-face meeting at the White House earlier this year.
The comedian talked about his one-on-one meeting with the president on Monday’s episode of the “Club Random With Bill Maher” program, where Trump’s daughter-in-law Lara Trump was a guest.
Maher toned down some of the accusations against him after the president attacked him for making the orangutan comparison, as he detailed to the Republican National Committee co-chairman.
“Let me tell you this, I’ve never said this publicly, but it’s true,” Maher recalled. “We went into the little product room after the Oval Office. He started yelling at me about things I did with the orangutan years ago.”
Per Maher, he refused to apologize for this part and argued that “it was a satire”. [Trump] sue [Barack] Obama’s birth certificate, he said, was “wrong, racist and unpleasant.”
He continued: “You know, he totally admitted it, and I said… ‘But you know what, I’ll also admit this… Did I cheat on the cheap? I did. And it’s not necessary.’
Since that meeting, Maher stated that “there were no jokes about her weight, hair, makeup, etc.” Maher made clear that digs about First Lady Melania Trump are also off the table.
“I have enough on my plate when it comes to politics,” he explained. “I don’t need to go there. So I thought, you know, that’s how people build bridges. You do a little thing here, I do a little move this way. It doesn’t hurt me, it doesn’t hurt you. And I like it better. I like to stick with it.”
Maher said his writers recently made a joke about the president’s hand, but he let it slide. “I’m 70 years old. This could be my hand tomorrow,” Maher said. “So I’m not making fun of physical deformities and things like that.”
He maintained that despite Maher’s new “no cheap shots” policy, he was still doing his job. [Trump] out.” Sharing that he received a lot of criticism from the left over his visit with Trump, he admitted that “the people who hate me for this never let me forget it.”
