Police called to investigate alleged assault at Scots College human tunnel ‘tradition’
The mother of a Scots College student has told how her son was injured after he was forced to walk through a human tunnel and called “disgusting” names as part of a school tradition held off-campus every other weekend.
Police are currently investigating the incident, which the mother described as a school tradition for boys aged 10 to 12 called “Bob 2025”, which took place off school grounds near Woollahra Golf Course in Rose Bay on Saturday afternoon.
“He was persuaded to go there and pressured to go. He was told it was an expectation for him to be there and all the boys had to be there to show support,” mum Trish told Ben Fordham’s 2GB breakfast programme.
“When he got there, this group attacked him. They gave him a flag and taunted him. They poured beer in his hair, they pulled his shirt, the beer stung his eyes, all over his shoulders, and he had bruises everywhere, and they absolutely humiliated him, they were laughing and taunting him, calling him disgusting names that I don’t think he’ll ever forget.”
A Rose Bay woman said her son was chased from the park by several boys before she helped him call his family and report the incident to police.
“The lady, the guardian angel, grabbed him, took him to her house and waited there until the police arrived. She encouraged him to call the police, stay on the phone with me, talk to me until I got there and the police arrived.”
The mother said she had contacted staff at the school who were providing assistance, but the principal, Dr. He said he had not spoken to Ian Lambert.
“I asked the high school principal to contact me yesterday,” he said. “I sent the videos to three members of the faculty. One of them was Dr. Lambert, who did not respond or reach me. The high school principal called and said he was willing to work with the detective to name some of the children in this clip.”
Police said they launched an investigation after a 17-year-old boy was allegedly assaulted at a sports field on Manion Avenue in Rose Bay.
They said the incident occurred around 17.40 on Saturday. A group of teenagers allegedly attacked a 17-year-old boy, but the boy did not suffer any injuries, police were told.
Scots has been contacted for comment.
