Largest maternity review in NHS history to be published

Gary and Sarah Andrews’ daughter Wynter died just 23 minutes after being born in 2019.

NUH was fined £800,000 in January 2023 after admitting failings in the care of Wynter and Sarah.

Gary, 38, said: “The report published today needs to be a wake-up call for the NHS locally and nationally, what has gone before cannot be allowed to continue.”

The couple has a four-year-old son named Bowie.

Sarah, 41, said: “I think personally it has become harder because we are watching Bowie grow up and realizing the milestones we missed at Wynter and it is so heartbreaking.

“We shouldn’t have had to fight in the first place, and in fact we shouldn’t have done this now. We shouldn’t have done this.

“There must be accountability and it should not be the responsibility of families to fight to be heard and believed.”

Sherwood Forest MP Michelle Welsh, who suffered birth trauma at the trust and is now the government’s birth advisor, said: “I absolutely believe this is a turning point.

“This is more than 2,500 families [and] More than 700 staff members came forward and described the horrific, horrific conditions in that hospital.

“Women not being listened to, being belittled, being told to stay at home and discrimination.

“This is a turning point, and if this isn’t a catalyst for change, I don’t know what will be.”
