Largest underground lake on Earth Lake Neuron: Scientists discover a hidden underground lake that may be the largest on Earth

An Exploration in the Depths of the Atmos Cave
Lake Neuron is located inside the Atmos Cave in the Vromoner region of southern Albania. Czech researchers first encountered the larger cave system in 2021 while exploring hot springs in the area.
Reaching the lake was not easy at all. The underground chamber lies hundreds of meters below the surface and requires ropes, special equipment, gas monitoring devices and repeated expeditions to gain safe access.
Researchers named the lake after the Neuron Foundation, which helped fund the equipment used during the expedition, according to an Eco News report.
Steam Led Scientists to Hidden Lake
The discovery began when researchers noticed steam rising from the limestone massif during previous expeditions. The unusual sight suggested that hot water and open underground spaces might exist below.
Following this clue, the expedition found a deep chasm extending more than 328 feet underground. They found a powerful thermal flow and a huge lake at the bottom. What started as an intriguing observation quickly turned into a major scientific discovery.
Advanced Technology Confirms Record Size
Finding the lake was only the first step. Scientists needed precise measurements to determine how big it was. The team returned with mobile LiDAR scanners and sonar equipment to create detailed three-dimensional maps of Atmos Cave and nearby cave systems, Eco News reports. Their measurements showed that Neuron Lake stretched approximately 460 feet long and 138 feet wide. The lake contains an estimated 294,300 cubic feet of warm, mineral-rich water and reaches a depth of approximately 25 feet.
The water temperature remains near 79 degrees Fahrenheit. These measurements confirmed that Lake Neuron is the largest underground thermal lake currently known.
How Did Nature Build This Underground Chamber?
Scientists say the cave was formed through a process known as hypogene cave formation.
The cave developed from rising mineral-rich thermal waters, rather than being carved primarily by surface rivers. The waters in the region contain hydrogen sulfide. When this gas mixes with oxygen, it can form sulfuric acid, which slowly dissolves limestone and forms underground chambers, according to an Eco News report.
Over long periods of time, these chemical reactions opened up vast cavities beneath the surface, eventually creating the vast chamber that now contains Lake Neuron.
Why Is Discovery Important?
Researchers believe the lake is part of a much larger underground water network. Tests showed that water from Lake Neuron was feeding springs in the valley; however, a spring known as the Old Hot Spring Spring appears to come from a different source.
Because groundwater systems are often interconnected, scientists say it is important to understand and protect these hidden environments. According to the Eco News report, research in the area is ongoing and includes geological, hydrological and biological studies to understand the region’s unique underground ecosystem.
Scientists are also working with local authorities to provide additional protection for the cave system.
