Oracle’s Chief Technology Officer (CTO) and billionaire Larry Ellison has announced his son’s move to Warner Bros., as he aims to keep the company’s valuable Hollywood assets out of the hands of streaming giant Netflix. He personally pledged $40.4 billion to support the Paramount takeover bid for Discovery.

According to a filing filed Monday, the warranty is held by Warner Bros. It is intended to assuage the board’s concerns about Paramount’s financing and the lack of full support from the Ellison family, which had previously made Netflix’s cash and stock offer more attractive.

Following the announcement, Warner Bros. Its shares rose about 4%, while Paramount’s shares rose about 3%.

According to Forbes, Larry Ellison became the second person in history whose net worth exceeded $400 billion in September of this year, driven by the AI-driven increase in Oracle’s shares.

Five years ago, Ellison made a permanent move to the Hawaiian island of Lanai, which he bought almost entirely in 2012 for $300 million. He served on Tesla’s board of directors from 2018 to 2022 and owned 45 million shares when he resigned.

Ellison also controls almost 50% of Paramount Skydance, the media giant created following the merger of Paramount and son David’s Skydance in August 2025 for approximately $28 billion (enterprise value). It also reportedly owns roughly 98% of Lanai, Hawaii’s sixth-largest island.

Born on August 17, 1944, in New York City to Florence Spellman, a Jewish mother, and an Italian-American biological father, who served as a U.S. Army Air Forces pilot, Larry Ellison is chairman, chief technology officer, and co-founder of Oracle, where he owns approximately 40% of the company.

After leading Oracle for 37 years, Ellison stepped down as CEO in 2014.

Ellison attended South Shore High School in Chicago before being accepted to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where he began as a pre-med student. During his time there, he was named science student of the year. After his stepmother’s death, he left the university after his sophomore year without taking the final exams.

After spending the summer of 1966 in California, Ellison enrolled for a single semester at the University of Chicago to study physics and mathematics. There he was introduced to computer design for the first time. He later moved to Berkeley, California, where he began his career as a computer programmer and worked for many different companies.
