Laura Hughes gets charges dismissed against 5 teens in husband’s death

A widow whose teacher-husband was killed during a senior prank gone horribly wrong has had her unusual request to drop charges against the teenagers involved has been granted.

A judge has approved paperwork requesting that charges be dismissed against Jayden Wallace, Aiden Hucks, Ana Katherine Luque, Ariana Cruz and Elijah Tate Owens, according to Hall County Magistrate Court.

According to authorities in Gainesville, Georgia, five teenagers, all 18 years old, went to the home of math teacher Jason Hughes on the night of March 6 to wrap toilet paper around trees.

The Hall County Sheriff’s Office said that while the group was trying to leave in two separate vehicles, Hughes tripped and fell on the slippery road while walking toward the street.

He was then hit by a car driven by Wallace.

Instead of an angry confrontation, “he was excited and waiting to catch them in the act,” said his wife, Laura. he told the New York Times.

“This is a terrible tragedy, and our family is determined to prevent a separate tragedy from happening that would devastate the lives of these students,” Hughes said. “This would go against Jason’s lifelong commitment to investing in the lives of these children.”

The Hugheses were both public school teachers and devoted their lives to teaching.

In a statement, the Wallace family thanked Laura for her “extraordinary compassion and spirit of forgiveness in the face of the tremendous loss of her husband.”

“As the family’s attorney, I join them in thanking the District Attorney’s Office for the Northeast Judicial Circuit for completing a thorough investigation and making the decision to immediately dismiss all charges against Jayden and the other students present,” X said in a statement to Fox News Digital.

“District Attorney Lee Darragh was able to act quickly because the facts and circumstances are not in dispute,” he said. “Jayden and his friends were participating in a competitive game outside their beloved teacher’s house as part of a long-standing junior-senior tradition at North Hall High School. As he left the house, Jayden never saw Mr. Hughes, and Jayden’s vehicle had traveled only a few feet when the accident occurred.

“Vehicular Homicide charges were not allowed because Jayden never operated his truck in a dangerous, improper or unsafe manner. In the end, there was no crime; it was just an extremely distressing and devastating accident.”

According to the Hall County School District, Hughes was a teacher at North Hall High School. He was listed as a math teacher on the school’s website. The school’s Fellowship of Christian Athletes also posted on Facebook that Hughes was also the school’s golf coach. (Facebook/Laura Palmer Hughes)

Jason Hughes was a loving husband, devoted father, and a passionate teacher, mentor and coach who was loved and respected by students and colleagues. He gave so much to so many people in a variety of ways. Our hearts and prayers go out to his wife and family. We ask the media and public to respect their privacy as they grieve.”

On GoFundMe, a family friend asked for funds to help her two children plan for the future.

“Jason’s life was a blessing to so many, and his untimely death will be indescribably difficult for his wife and two young sons for years to come,” she said at the fundraiser.
