White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said Thursday that her predecessor, Karine Jean-Pierre, had difficulty in the job because she did not have an open relationship with former President Joe Biden.

Leavitt said in an interview with Turning Point USA CEO Erika Kirk that President Donald Trump’s “real” approach has eliminated the need for a political pivot.

“I saw my predecessor in this role had some tough times,” Leavitt said, referring to Jean-Pierre. “I think it’s because he wasn’t able to communicate very openly and transparently with his boss.”

In response, Leavitt called Trump “honest” and made his views clear to employees and the public.

“He just puts it on the table. No guessing, no questioning, no spin, it’s just the way it is,” Leavitt said.

Jean-Pierre served as press secretary for nearly three years during Biden’s presidency. He has been frequently criticized by Republican lawmakers for relying heavily on memos and trying to argue the president’s positions beyond prepared statements.

He also frequently defended Biden’s mental acuity on the podium, though later reports would suggest that even the president’s allies had reservations about his ability to do the job.

“We’re talking about an incredibly partisan time politically. It’s hard to break any message, and it was also a duty,” he added.

Jean-Pierre also pushed back on claims about Biden’s age, telling “CBS Mornings” that he saw “someone who was always busy. I saw someone who understood politics, led us to policy, and also understood history.”
