Leicestershire Police confirmed a hand grenade was found in a donated box.
They also revealed that the army’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal team was called to the scene.
In a statement, a Leicestershire Police spokesman said: “We were called to Gladstone Street in Leicester just after 2.05pm this afternoon (November 18) after concerns were raised about a hand grenade found in a box donated to a charity shop.
“For safety reasons, some roads were closed in the area around a car park. The Army’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit was called to assist officers.”
