Lena Dunham recalls father not wanting to vote with her amid 2012 backlash

Lena Dunham remembers her own father not wanting to appear with her at voting booths during the 2012 Barack Obama-Mitt Romney election.

Open “Interview” podcastDunham recalled that when she started receiving hate online, it even affected her personal relationships.

“I remember there was a day I was going to vote with my dad, and it wasn’t in the book. And I was campaigning for Obama, it was 2012. And I remember him saying, ‘I don’t know if I want to go vote with Lena Dunham,'” she recalled.

“And I was like my dad thought voting with me would signal something,” Dunham continued.

JENNIFER LAWRENCE SAID THAT SHE AVOIDED POLITICS TO AVOID THE FIRE THAT TOOK THE COUNTRY TOWARDS.

The actress and producer said her father was her “best friend in the world,” so her father not wanting to be seen in public with her was the moment when she realized “something was going on here.”

“I was campaigning for Obama, it was 2012. I remember him saying, ‘I don’t know if I want to go vote with Lena Dunham.'”

Dunham faced offline drama in 2012 for the HBO series “Girls,” which she wrote and starred in. At the time, viewers were unhappy with the lack of racial inclusivity and emphasis on economic privilege in the series, which ran for five years.

Speaking on the New York Times podcast, Dunham believes that the negativity she received from the show was due to people not liking her personally.

“I’m going to say something that sounds cop-like. I’m not saying it, but that’s the only way I can put it. I’ve been bothering people since I was very little. It’s like I was an annoying kid,” he said.

Dunham believes this, combined with the intense female sexuality in the show, has led to viewers being unhappy.

Just before the premiere of “Girls” in 2012, old racially insensitive tweets Dunham wrote resurfaced.

Over the years, Dunham has found herself in many controversies. Dunham compared producer Judd Apatow’s “obsession” with the rape allegations against Bill Cosby to his obsession with the Holocaust. He compared online hate from blogs to domestic violence and compared President Donald Trump to Dylann Roof, who killed nine black churchgoers in Charleston, S.C., in 2015 because of their race.
