Sportsbet guest lecturer at Monash university prompts review

Monash University hosted a lecture by a Sportsbet executive, prompting faculty scrutiny and prompting the gambling giant to be banned from its Faculty of Information Technology.
“What is good design?” The seminar, given by Sportsbet’s general manager of product design, focused on application design for graduate students in the FIT5120 unit within the scope of the “industry experience studio project”.
After discussing other examples of what he sees as good, functional design (including cryptocurrency trading platform Coinbase), the Sportsbet representative talked about “the thing closest to my heart… Sportsbet.”
“So people don’t necessarily use Sportsbet to place bets and at the same time [purpose] “Although it is to make money, many times people actually rent Sportsbet or another betting app to increase their enjoyment of sports, to give them an in-game exposure, to enhance their connection with the sports they love,” he said.
The guest speaker also explained that when reviewing the success of a design decision, the company will ask whether it “still drives people to bet or takes them down a completely different path.”
“Understanding this led to the development of the same play multiple. This is where people can bet on multiple combined outcomes for combined winnings. By designing a true tracking experience, people can actually track how their bets are progressing.
“Of course, this UI doesn’t look that exciting and believe me, we have plans to make it more engaging and cutting-edge, but the point is that even through such a simple UI, this actually adds and increases the excitement and anticipation that comes with watching the game.”

The loss of multiple plays on the same game is significantly higher odds compared to regular betting for gamblers and has faced criticism from harm reduction advocates. Sports Betting retreated Multiple commercials for the same game on free-to-air television earlier this year due to “community sentiment.”
Sportsbet’s guest speaker went on to talk about app design through the “job to be done” framework, essentially highlighting the core purpose and use case of the app for design purposes.
“The job here is to invest in the game and feel invested in the outcome. Another job for our users is to feel like an expert. For many people, betting is actually a hobby that they choose to do responsibly. They see themselves as educated bettors, whether it’s horse racing, NBA or AFL. They essentially rent the Sportsbet app to test themselves and their sports knowledge.”
A Monash University spokesperson confirmed that the Faculty of Information Technology considered the inclusion of Sportsbet to be an error of judgment given the ethical sensitivities surrounding the gambling industry. The spokesperson also confirmed that Sportsbet will not be invited back to the unit in the future and that the faculty in question will review and strengthen the selection process for industry presenters to ensure future alignment with the unit’s learning outcomes on social and ethical responsibility.
“Students enrolled in the FIT5120 Industry Experience Studio Project Unit interact with a wide range of guest speakers from the IT industry. These seminars are designed to provide insight into real-world applications of data science and are offered on a voluntary basis. Neither the university nor the speakers receive payment for these presentations,” the spokesperson said.
Sportsbet spokesperson said: cricket It said the relationship with Monash University was “voluntary, no money was exchanged” and was largely “focused on general design principles, with only passing mention of specific Sportsbet examples”.
Martin Thomas, CEO of the Gambling Reform Alliance, said: cricket “The gambling industry is responsible for social harm on an industrial scale in Australia. As we see here, the industry is often legitimized and given opportunities, where ethics and social responsibilities are sometimes mistakenly ignored, sometimes deliberately due to the power of the industry.”
“Academic institutions need to take their ethical responsibilities seriously – and this is similar to the ethical investment community to some extent – we sometimes talk about climate change, tobacco or alcohol, but for the most part gambling is not seen as a socially destructive industry and so [gambling companies] “We are being given a platform that should never have been given.”
