Lidl has announced that most supermarkets in the UK will close for three days within a few weeks.
The budget retailer has confirmed it is looking to give workers an extended break, with all 980 stores closing on Christmas Day, December 25.
The majority of stores will also close on Boxing Day, December 26, and New Year’s Day, January 1. All Lidl locations outside the M25 will close on New Year’s Day, while most branches outside London and Wales will close on Boxing Day.
Shoppers are urged to check specific opening hours via Lidl’s website store locator or the Lidl Plus app. Lidl joins a growing list of retailers giving workers three days off.
Aldi has confirmed that all its UK outlets will be closed for three days over the festive season.
The supermarket chain said it would close on Christmas Day and not reopen until Saturday, December 27, giving workers “the chance to spend time with friends and family”.
Aldi stores will likewise remain closed on New Year’s Day and will reopen on Friday, January 2, 2026. Home Bargains will also close on Christmas Day on Thursday 25 December, Boxing Day on Friday 26 December and New Year’s Day on Thursday 1 January.
A Home Bargains spokesperson said: “Our colleagues work incredibly hard throughout the year and we want this dedication to be recognised.
“As a family-run business, we understand the importance of spending time with family and friends, especially during the holidays. We are proud to offer our teams additional time off so they can enjoy the festive season.”
