Teen accused of sharing IS terror video makes bail bid

A violent Islamic state promotional video offers a teenager accused of publishing online and sending a threat to a Jewish community group.

The 18 -year -old child, who could not be named for legal reasons, was accused of crimes, including using a transportation service to publish and threaten extremist materials by the Anti -Terrorist police in May.

A children’s court rejected it on bail, but on Wednesday, he filed a new application for freedom at the Victoria Supreme Court.

The court arrested the child on May 22, after allegedly sent a threat to the Australian Federal Police to kill the Melbourne Hebrew community and to bomb a secondary school.

It is claimed that the young person has published a IS Promotion video on Instagram, depicts a few prisoners and photos that hold their knives and machete.

According to the court, it was claimed that there were other videos showing air strikes on civilians and dead bodies.

Young was accused of separate crimes by the Anti -Terrorist Police in 2021, but a magistrate remained in 2023 after determining that the civil servants had acted inappropriate.

On Wednesday, his mother told the court that his son was “well -groomed” by the police in the previous case and claimed that the civil servants encouraged the child against terrorism.

He said he was not aware of his son’s phone when he was arrested in May, but his family would make changes if he was released on bail.

This included all the electronic devices and a single kitchen knife safely locking it overnight, scanning with a metal detector before leaving the child’s home, and sleeping in their rooms.

The court said that electronic monitoring, curfew and ban on entering certain places were bail conditions.

Attorney Sam Norton, the young person’s autism spectrum disorder, as well as other cognitive issues identified and fixed and sensitive to fixations, he said.

Mr. Norton acknowledged that the prosecution case was not weak, but he argued that if not in custody, it was better for the young and society.

“This is an isolated child looking for social connection and reaction.” He said.

“This is what he needs care and help, and if he encounters bail, he can get it.”

However, the prosecutor Brett Stevens argued that the accusation was serious and that the young man showed a fixation for years.

Mr. Stevens, the young man’s arrest time will not exceed the possible penalty and the child is released if he is a risk for society, he said.

He drew attention to the comments that the youth wanted to kill the youth justice worker and claimed that he brought a knife to his previous appointments.

He also claimed that the child wanted to learn the French foreign legion and to learn to participate in different armies in the future.

Justice Rowena Orr will decide on a bail at a later date.
