Lindian Resources has achieved another important milestone at its Kangankunde rare earth project in Malawi, East Africa, with the Tipume accommodation camp now officially open and operational.
Completion of permanent on-site accommodation removes a significant logistical hurdle for the project, allowing a permanent workforce to support construction across multiple work fronts as Kangankunde progresses into the construction phase.
The first accommodation is already occupied, with 65 rooms completed and ready to support increasing numbers of site workers. Lindian also completed the first wave of permanent mobilization; 38 personnel are currently in the camp to establish a full operational presence in the field.
The timing is no coincidence. Obsideo, Lindian’s engineering, procurement and construction contractor, is preparing to accelerate process plant construction, with staff gradually relocating to the camp as activity intensifies.
‘With the basic infrastructure in place, we are well positioned to accelerate development and maintain the path to first production.’
Lindian Resources Executive Director Zac Kömür
The remaining camp infrastructure is scheduled to be completed by mid-April, increasing total capacity to 90 personnel, enabling the deployment of a larger construction workforce.
Lindian Resources general manager Zac Kömür said: “The ahead-of-schedule commissioning of Tipume Camp is a clear demonstration of the discipline of execution and momentum of delivery at Kangankunde. Establishing a permanent workforce on site allows us to increase activity on multiple fronts while maintaining control over schedule and delivery.”
The camp’s milestone was delivered at Kangankunde along with a strong safety record with over 500,000 lost time injury-free hours. Currently, approximately 740 people are actively working at the site, comprising construction, initial works and supporting activities.
Lindian says a major risk reduction step has been taken with permanent accommodation now available. The project is moving from early work to full construction mode, supported by out-of-process infrastructure that supports sustainable operations, tighter coordination and schedule control.
With beds made, boots on the ground and construction gaining momentum, Lindian is turning its plans into steady progress at Kangankunde as its march towards first rare earth production accelerates.
