Liverpool: New set-piece kings can still achieve ‘something beautiful’ in Premier League

There is a notion among some fans that a good season is one where your team has a lot to play for by April.

Liverpool won’t be able to win back-to-back Premier League titles, but will continue March in the FA Cup and Champions League and will now be in a strong position to finish in the top five, effectively confirming Champions League football next season.

At the end of a week that saw the club confirm record revenues of over £700m and after-tax profits of £8m in the last financial year, the importance of this European spotlight cannot be underestimated.

Midfielder Alexis Mac Allister, who scored Liverpool’s third goal, told Match of the Day: “The last four or five months are the months where teams have shown what they can do.

“This is what we want. We know how important it is for our club and for us as a team to participate in the Champions League. The goal is obvious and we will do everything to be closer to the teams in the top ranks.”

Teammate Cody Gakpo had a similar view and told Sky Sports: “It was a good afternoon. We are achieving success step by step.” [to be] a better team.

“We’ve had difficult moments throughout the season, but hopefully these last few games will be the start of something good.”

With back-to-back games against Wolves in the league and the FA Cup next week before traveling to Galatasaray in the Champions League, the next 10 days or so will go a long way in how the season is ultimately remembered.

Get through this unscathed and whisper it quietly and Liverpool fans might actually start to believe they can do something truly beautiful.
