Keir Starmer breaks silence as dozens of Labour MPs demand he quits | Politics | News

Sir Keir Starmer has again insisted he will not resign despite calls from dozens of Labor MPs following the party’s coup in local elections. The Prime Minister warned that if he left No 10 it would “plunge the country into chaos”.

Speaking in south London today, Sir Keir said: “I’m not going to give up on this; that would plunge the country into chaos. But that doesn’t mean we don’t need to respond. That doesn’t mean we don’t need to rebuild. That doesn’t mean we don’t need to chart the path forward. That’s what I’ll be doing in the coming days.”

He said Labor needed to make arguments about hope and the future and appeal to young people, and acknowledged that “hope has not been present enough in the first two years of this Government”.

He added: “I will make these claims, but above all I will make clear the values and beliefs that guide me.”

It comes as a number of Labor supporters publicly demanded that Sir Keir either resign or set a timetable for his departure.

Labor lost more than 1,000 councilors in Thursday’s vote and Reform UK made stunning gains on the Red Wall.

Sir Keir brought former prime minister Gordon Brown back into government in an effort to cling to power.

Previously, Labor deputy leader Lucy Powell said Nigel Farage would hold the keys to 10th place in the next General Election if the party failed to win back the voters it lost to Reform Britain and the Greens.
