California Republican Rep. Doug LaMalfa dies, House GOP in question on Tuesday. He was 65 years old.
LaMalfa’s death would tighten the House majority and could jeopardize Speaker Mike Johnson’s grip on the House. There are 219 Republicans and 213 Democrats left in the House after Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) resigned Monday. LaMalfa’s death left 218 Republicans in the House.
Democrats are expected to pick up additional seats in special elections in the coming months. Two Democrats will compete in a runoff in Texas at the end of the month, and the election to replace New Jersey Governor-elect Mikie Sherrill will be held later this year.
LaMalfa had represented California’s 1st Congressional District since 2013. He chaired the Congressional Western Caucus.
