London Euston trains LIVE: Major lines blocked including Birmingham and Liverpool | UK | News

Here’s what Network Rail has to say about how signals, points and faults are handled.

“Signals tell train drivers when it is safe to go and which routes their trains will take.

“There are approximately 40,000 signals on the railway and a complete signaling system is a complex system with many more parts working together.

“A signaling system collects all the information needed to inform drivers that it is safe to proceed, so when our systems detect a problem, the signals automatically turn red and stop the trains from running.

“Points, also called switches or switches, are devices at junctions that allow trains to move from one track to another. They are essential for efficient railway operations, allowing trains to be directed in various directions.”
