Chaos was reported at Gatwick Airport in London after the discovery of potholes, which led to the closure of all train lines between Purley and East Croydon. The Gatwick Express has also been suspended and is not expected to operate until Monday morning.
Passengers were seen waiting outside the airport. Southern Railways said: “A message from Southern Railways added: “A bridge at Purley needs urgent repairs, resulting in the closure of all lines at this station. Trains are currently unable to travel to and from this station and will be canceled or revised.” The company is also urging people not to travel.
The outage was confirmed to be caused by sinkholes near a railway bridge in south London.
In another update, it was stated that Gatwick Express services will only operate between London Victoria and East Croydon. A message shared by Gatwick Express on X read: “All lines between Gatwick Airport and East Croydon are closed. Gatwick Express services will be changed and you may need to switch to more trains than usual.” The Gatwick Express service from Victoria has been suspended and the line is expected to be out of use until at least Monday morning.
