London Tube strikes live: Major walkout to go ahead after last-ditch talks fail to resolve dispute

Disruption expected in London’s transport network

During the strike action, no services are expected on the Circle line, the Piccadilly line, the Metropolitan line between Baker Street and Aldgate and the Central line between White City and Liverpool Street.

Service is expected on all other Metro lines on both days. However, journeys will be disrupted and service levels will vary across the London Underground network.

TfL: Continuation of RMT strikes ‘bitterly disappointing’

A TfL spokesman said: “It is bitterly disappointing that despite five-hour meetings with the RMT in Acas and repeated assurances that the four-day working week proposals would remain voluntary, the RMT has chosen to continue with disruptive strike action.

“We will do our best to provide as much service as possible during this action.”

RMT: TfL failed to address members’ concerns over fatigue

An RMT spokesman said: “Despite our best efforts in Acas discussions, TfL has been unable to provide reassurance about our members’ deep concerns about fatigue, reduced flexibility, shift times and the impact these proposals could have on a safety-critical role such as Tube driving.

“We are ready for meaningful talks, but tomorrow’s strike action will now continue.”

What is the dispute between RMT and TfL?

The strikes were in response to issues including the new four-day week, which the union said its members opposed.

As part of the ongoing trial on the Bakerloo line, drivers can work voluntarily four days a week and their weekly working hours are reduced from 36 hours to 35 hours.

Contract hours will remain the same as paid meal breaks will be introduced. Drivers would work longer days, but fewer days per week and fewer total hours each week.

Drivers’ union Aslef accepted the new regulations.

The RMT union said this working day would be too long, causing driver fatigue and endangering safety.

Instead, they suggested working 32 hours a week for four days; This means drivers will work three hours less per week for the same salary.

What did the RMT say about the strikes?

The Rail, Maritime and Transport union has argued there are serious concerns about the new four-day week proposals, despite drivers’ union Aslef agreeing to the new regulations.

An RMT spokesman said: “Our members have raised serious concerns about fatigue, longer shifts, reduced flexibility and the impact these proposals could have on a safety-critical role.”

A union source said Tube drivers had “very real” concerns about spending longer hours in the driver’s cab, becoming more fatigued, losing flexibility in their shifts and the impact this could have on a role where safety must come first.
