Lost Continent demolition begins at Universal Orlando Islands of Adventure

More than 25 years after its debut as one of Universal Orlando’s most iconic themed lands, the Lost Continent is beginning to phase out the Islands of Adventure.

Demolition work has begun on the aging land. Footage from a local station’s news helicopter shows an excavator positioned next to a pile of rubble, according to multiple reports.

“Over the coming months, venues and experiences at Lost Continent will phase out permanent closures to make way for a new themed area,” a Universal Orlando spokesperson told Fox News Digital.

The statement also said, “This will include the closure of Mythos Restaurant in 2027.”

The Lost Continent opened with Islands of Adventure in 1999, helping define the park’s initial identity with its mythology-inspired architecture, soaring stone facades, and detailed storytelling rooted in ancient legends.

According to Universal Orlando, it has served for years as one of the resort’s most atmospheric lands, blending fantasy adventure, cutting-edge effects and live entertainment.

The area was also home to many fan-favorite attractions.

The Duel Dragons roller coasters – later rethemed as Dragon Challenge after the arrival of The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – were among the resort’s most iconic thrill rides.

According to Universal Orlando and Wizarding World history pages, they were famous for their nested layouts, synchronized dispatches and near misses.

Wrath of Poseidon was another major attraction, drawing crowds with dramatic water tunnel effects, fire explosions and live actors.

But over the last 15 years, Universal has steadily downsized the land.

According to Universal Orlando, in 2010, Dueling Dragons coasters were re-themed as Dragon Challenge as part of the adjacent Wizarding World of Harry Potter expansion.

This attraction closed in 2017 to make way for Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorcycle Adventure, which is now one of the resort’s most popular attractions.

Poseidon’s Fury will close in 2023, according to Universal Orlando’s retired attractions page.

Mythos Restaurant is expected to remain open through 2027 as part of Universal’s phased closure plan, according to the company’s press release.

Universal has announced that the resort’s Horror Makeover Extravaganza at Universal Studios Florida has been temporarily closed in preparation for what the company is calling a “reimagined experience.”

The updated production will “showcase a mix of classic and modern horror features and surprisingly entertaining twists.”

The demolition received mixed reactions from Universal visitors.

“I’m glad it’s finally happening because it was needed. So two events have been closed for 8 years and 3 years,” one Reddit user said.

However, many fans were sad to see Lost Continent go.

“Goodbye Lost Continent, you will always be my favorite show,” one TikTok user said.
