Macaulay Culkin sets strict rules for fan interactions with his children

Macaulay Culkin has strict rules for fans who want to approach him in public.
The ‘Home Alone’ icon guested on Jason Bateman and Will Arnett’s show “Mindless” podcast He explained that he sets “certain ground rules” when he plans to leave the house.
Culkin explained some of his personal boundaries, saying, “Don’t approach me when I’m at the dinner table. I don’t like that. Don’t approach me when I’m with my kids.”

Culkin has two children with actress Brenda Song: sons Dakota, 4, and Carson, 3.

Culkin emphasized to Bateman and Arnett that fans should “definitely” not follow him into the bathroom.
“Don’t approach me when we’re at the dinner table. I don’t like it. Don’t approach me when I’m with my kids.”
The actor said he learned over time that he was responsible for his social interactions with his fans.
“I’m responsible for the social contract. I’m responsible for the interaction,” Culkin said. “I can guide this interaction.”
Culkin began his Hollywood career at a fairly young age and quickly rose to prominence as a talented child actor in the late ’80s. Culkin’s breakthrough came in 1990 with “Home Alone”; his portrayal of the smart and independent Kevin McCallister here made him one of the world’s most famous child stars almost overnight.

Following the iconic holiday film’s recent screening at the Academy Museum in honor of the film’s 35th anniversary, the 45-year-old actor and the film’s director Chris Columbus sat down for a Q&A, and Culkin shared that his two children are big fans of the film.

“They don’t even call him ‘Home Alone,’ they call him ‘Kevin.’ They say, ‘Wow, Kevin is really funny.’ And I say, ‘He’s also handsome, and he’s someone your mother loves.’ [Brenda Song] could happen,” Culkin said, via Hollywood Reporter.
Although the two are big fans of the Christmas movie, Culkin said he didn’t tell them he was Kevin, saying, “I’m trying to keep the magic alive.”

“I showed it to my oldest son; he wanted to see a picture of me and my siblings, so I pulled out this old photo; they’re all my siblings, and he looks at me and goes, ‘Who is that? He looks like Kevin,'” Culkin shared. “And I say, ‘Oh, no, there’s no one, there’s your aunt.'”
During the Q&A, Culkin said that his perspective on the film changed after becoming a father and that he now resonates with it. Catherine O’Hara his character “sees how desperately and how hard he is trying to get home” to his son.

She also shared that since becoming a parent, people have asked her if she watched the movie “Home Alone” with her kids, to which she responds, “Of course, that movie is great.”

“But I’m not watching the movie, I’m watching them,” he said. “I watch their eyes. I listen to them laugh and things like that. And it makes me really proud to be a part of something like this. So now it’s resonating. I can see it through their eyes now.”

He continued: “You grew up with this education, now you are raising your children with this education, right? Now I am raising my children with this education. This has a completely different meaning. It is like this.” I’m looking at the movie nowadays.”
