‘Repeating bell’ heard in plane’s cockpit

The total death toll had risen to 14, including 11 on the ground, Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg said on social media at AEDT on Saturday.

The 34-year-old MD-11 cargo plane was en route to Honolulu and reportedly had approximately 38,000 gallons of fuel on board when it crashed. Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear told reporters they barely missed a restaurant, a convention center and a large Ford plant.

Inman said it will be months before the transcript of the cockpit recording is made public as part of the investigative process.

Investigators combed video for clues

Dramatic video captured the crash from phones, dashcams and CCTV, providing investigators with visual evidence from multiple angles of what happened.

The NTSB said Friday that preliminary data on the plane’s altitude showed it rose to about 30 meters above the ground, not 144 meters. Inman said the plane reached speeds of 220 mph before crashing just outside the Louisville airport.

The main component of the engine and parts of the engine fan blades were recovered from the airport.

Inman said UPS stated that no maintenance work was being done before the flight “that would delay the flight in any way.” He said investigators will review the video to determine if anything was done around the plane in the previous days.

The UPS package handling facility in Louisville is the company’s largest. The hub employs more than 20,000 people in the region, operates 300 flights a day and sorts more than 400,000 packages per hour.

Allegation of negligence in the case

The lawsuit regarding the accident has already started. A federal lawsuit was filed Thursday against UPS by an automotive repair company destroyed in the crash and a resident who was treated at the hospital after smoke inhalation.

The lawsuit, which also included the names of the aircraft and engine manufacturers of the aircraft, claimed that the defendants “prevented unreasonable damage by negligently violating the obligation of reasonable care.” He is seeking unspecified damages.

The companies named as defendants did not immediately respond to emails seeking comment Friday.
