Kristin Scott Thomas, 66, makes rare comments about husband John Micklethwait and finding love in her 60s two years after secretly tying the knot

Kristin Scott Thomas has given a rare insight into her marriage, explaining how finding love has made her ‘more joyful’ than she was a decade or two ago.
The 66-year-old actress married John Micklethwait (63), editor-in-chief of Bloomberg News, two years ago, and the duo wrote the script of My Mother’s Wedding together, inspired by her own life story.
Appearing on Elizabeth Day’s How To Fail podcast, Kristin spoke about John when asked if she felt ‘more joyful now than I did 10/20 years ago’.
Kristin replied: ‘Yes. And I think it’s because I found love, which is a beautiful thing.’
He continued: ‘I have also managed to complete some things in my career. And when I say that, I mean, I acted, I kind of made a tragedy now. I feel like I’ve sort of accomplished that and emptied the bag. There is no more left.
‘I think that’s what I did when I did Elektra. I guess that’s what I thought, oh, I don’t have to do this again. I don’t need to cry over a dead father again. And I’d say playing it is pretty therapeutic.’

The big screen star is extremely private when talking about her relationship, but went on to reveal what it was like to work together on her directorial debut.
The actor stars in the film alongside Scarlett Johansson, Sienna Miller, Emily Beecham, Freida Pinto and Thibault de Montalembert.
The plot tells the story of three sisters who return to their family home to attend the third wedding of their twice-widowed mother, each dealing with their own personal problems.
Kristin said about working together: ‘It was great, really fun. We complete each other.
‘He manages to keep many things in place at the same time, whereas I’m a completely disorganized person and find this quite difficult. ‘I’m much better than him at dialogue, I could hear the voices but he could build the structure.’
The couple got married secretly in 2024 after five years of dating.
A friend of mine told The Independent at the time: ‘They fit together perfectly. They are smart, sarcastic and curious, but also loyal to each other.
‘Everyone is so happy that they got married after five years of wonderful love.’

Kristin has three children; Hannah, Joseph and George with her ex-husband François Olivennes, from whom she divorced in 2005 after 17 years of marriage.
Mom’s Wedding is inspired by Kristin’s childhood trauma of losing both her father and stepfather, a pilot, in separate military jet crashes.
The actor also said the loss of his mother, Deborah, who passed away after a battle with cancer, ‘hit him like a tank’.
He said: ‘My father died when I was almost five and a half. And then the same thing happened again when I was 11 and started a new school. And I think it was more than any one of them could handle alone.’
‘Mourning for my mother was like being crushed under a tank. I couldn’t because I was now, I had gotten over all of that and I had accepted the fact that one can grieve and all of that. And it was such a shock.’
